Job Description: Roller shutter / smoke and fire curtain engineer

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced Roller Shutter Engineer to join our growing team.

Located near to our Midlands base (DY6), you will be required to work nationally and a full driving licence is essential.

Role & Responsibilities:

  • We need you to have at least 2 years’ experience working with roller shutters, doors or barriers or smoke & fire curtains in a commercial or retail environment.
  • Working as a mobile engineer you will be responsible for the installation, repair, service, maintenance and PPM visits on customer sites across the UK.
  • You will be expected to collect all information required for us to quote for upgrade, repair or replacement of components and systems.
  • Experience with electrics, wiring and commissioning beneficial.
  • This position will be working primarily on roller shutters, fire shutters and curtains but knowledge of the following is advantageous: sectional doors, fast action doors, steel doors and industrial doors.
  • Full UK Driving Licence is essential.
  • DHF, NVQ, CSCS, IPAF & PASMA certification desirable.
  • We expect all our engineers to have high standards of customer service and great communication skills.

Job Description: Trainee Roller Shutter & Smoke/Fire Curtain Engineer (Fitter’s Mate)

Overview

We are looking for a motivated and practical individual to join our busy installation and service team as a Trainee Roller Shutter & Smoke/Fire Curtain Engineer (Fitter’s Mate). This entry level role is ideal for someone who enjoys interesting hands on work, learning new technical skills, and supporting experienced engineers on a wide range of installation, maintenance, and repair tasks.

You will work alongside senior engineers on primarily commercial and retail sites, gaining full training in roller shutters, fire curtains, smoke curtains, and associated safety systems.

Key Responsibilities

Installation & Repairs

  • Assist engineers with the installation of roller shutters, smoke curtains, and fire curtain systems.
  • Support with fault finding, repairs, and routine maintenance.
  • Help with fixing, wiring, testing, and commissioning systems under supervision.

Site Work & Practical Tasks

  • Load, unload, and prepare tools, materials, and equipment.
  • Measure, cut, drill, and assemble components as instructed.
  • Ensure work areas are kept tidy, safe, and organised.
  • Follow instructions to support safe lifting and positioning of equipment.

Safety & Compliance

  • Adhere to all health and safety procedures on site.
  • Assist with completing basic paperwork, job sheets, and checklists.
  • Learn and follow industry standards for security doors, fire safety and smoke control systems.

Team Support

  • Work closely with senior engineers, acting as a reliable second person on site.
  • Communicate clearly with team members and customers when required.
  • Represent the company professionally at all times.
  • Report to and liase with other team members for improved efficiency and productivity.

Skills & Qualities

  • Practical, hands on mindset with willingness to learn.
  • Basic mechanical or electrical aptitude (training provided).
  • Good problem solving approach and attention to detail.
  • Ability to follow instructions and work safely.
  • Reliable, punctual, and able to work as part of a team.
  • Comfortable working at heights and using power tools (training provided).

Requirements

  • Full UK driving licence.
  • CSCS card or willingness to obtain one.
  • Ability to travel to various sites, sometimes with early starts, overnight works.
  • Right to work in the UK.
